- WAXED CABLE LINEN THREAD Fil au Chinois 432. 10m length.
WAXED CABLE LINEN THREAD Fil au Chinois 432. 10m length.
FIL AU CHINOIS is a prestigious brand of linen thread produced in the North of France since the mid 19th century. The brand was created at a time when oriental culture was very much in fashion, and the name "au Chinois" refers to the Chinese character that was chosen to illustrate the various labels on the products. The thread is still produced in France to this day and is used by famous Parisian fashion houses in the creation of their leather accessories, and by many discerning leather designers and crafters who recognise it as a high-quality thread with great strength and resistance and beautiful rich colours.
As well as being used for leather work, it can also be used for bookbinding, jewellery making, or for any projects where very strong, rounded stitching is required.
This thread is cabled, or corded, (lin "câblé"), meaning that the strands have been plied twice. This increases the solidity of the thread, but also makes it more smooth and rounded. The thread has been lightly waxed with starch and beeswax, but does not feel sticky.
We currently stock the thread size N°432 fil au chinois, which is 0.63mm diametre.
This listing is for a 10m length of the thread which will be wound onto a sturdy, re-usable thread card, as shown in the first and second photo. Full spools are very expensive so we are offering you the opportunity to try a smaller quantity of yarn without having to invest in a full spool. (If you are interested in purchasing a full 50g spool/200m, please contact us.)
There is also a separate listing in our shop for 20m lengths.
We have 14 colours available, including neutrals and more vibrant contrast colours.
Fil au Chinois is considered to be one of the best waxed cable linen threads in the world. Watch this video to see it in action. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DP8NRXi-jDY
